Happy Birthday Enterprise! It was only in our second decade that we came up with our now trademark “We’ll pick you up” service, as well as making some interesting acquisitions too. Our third decade contains one other key milestone in our history.
In our third decade in business, the company uniformly adopted the Enterprise identity across all operations as it aggressively expanded from coast to coast.
The winning game plan, refined and repeated over and over as Enterprise established a presence in new markets, focused on aggressively building the neighborhood rental business – serving customers who needed a temporary replacement vehicle because of an accident, repair or theft, or a different car for a special occasion or leisure trip. Here are some key milestones from the decade:
1978
- Annual revenue passes $50 million.
- Executive Leasing (St. Louis) changes to Enterprise Leasing.
- Company expands into Indiana.
1979
- Company expands into Colorado and Texas.
1980
- Rental fleet reaches 5,000 vehicles.
- Total assets surpass $100 million.
- National Reservation Center opens with toll-free number.
- Company expands into San Francisco.
1981
- Annual revenue exceeds $100 million.
1982
- More than 10,000 rental cars in service.
- Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation established.
1983
- Over 100 offices.
- Company expands into Chicago.
1984
- Over 20,000 rental units in service.
- Total assets top $250 million.
- Company expands into Washington, D.C.
1985
- Company expands into Philadelphia.
1986
- Nearly 20,000 lease units in service.
- Company expands into Baltimore and Minnesota.
1987
- Over 40,000 rental units in service.
- Total assets exceed $500 million.
- Company begins operations in Detroit and Virginia.
