You’re at a job fair, and there are about 35 companies displaying their opportunities. So, what do you do?
Recruiter: Hi how are you today?
You: Fine
Recruiter: What are you looking for today?
You: A job
Recruiter: Great! What kind of job?
You: I don’t know. What do you have?
Welcome to the most common way prospective candidates introduce themselves to recruiters. When you attend a career fair, you need to have a plan for success. Know what companies you want to speak to. Once you have this list, then develop a set of fact finding questions. So, how should the conversation go? Take a look.
You: Hi! I saw you were going to be here today and I wanted to meet you.
Recruiter: That’s fantastic! What in particular are you looking for today?
You: Well, I was looking on your website, and XYZ really interested me. I am qualified in XYZ and just have a few questions for you.
There is a huge difference in how this candidate approached the recruiter. First of all, it is quite apparent that the candidate made a plan prior to attending the career fair. Most career fairs publish a list of companies attending. A few days before, make a list of the companies that will be there that you would like to speak to. Once you make your list, go and do your homework. Look on their website to see what opportunities they have, look at their values, stance on corporate social responsibility, etc. Follow them on Twitter and Linkedin. This list and information will help you work the career fair efficiently and effectively as you will only spend time talking to the people you want to.
The most important thing is to be prepared and have a plan. Be assertive. Sell your skill set. This is best way to take charge of the product you know best – you.
