When I first started working at Enterprise a few years ago now, it was in an administrative position that I’d found through a temping agency. It was never my intention to pursue a career – I simply needed to earn some cash while I was applying for positions where I could use my degree in chemistry. That feeling didn’t last long! Throughout my time at Enterprise, I was aware of how fast the company was growing in the UK and of the opportunities that were being created as a result. There were success stories all around me, and I could really see the investment that the senior leaders were prepared to make if an individual demonstrated aptitude and commitment to customers and other team members.
When the chance came up to join the re-marketing team as an analyst, I didn’t have to think twice. My manager encouraged me and supported my application – which was a great feeling for someone so new to the organisation. I was nervous at first because I needed to learn new technical skills, but the company invested in my training so I had a platform to build on. From then on, it was up to me and where I wanted to go. So one minute I was temping, and the next I was working on reports and IT solutions which were adding real, demonstrable business value to the company. After that, my role just kept on expanding and soon I was working with IT teams in St. Louis and business teams across Europe.
At Enterprise, no one is inaccessible. I’ve worked with everyone from teams out in the field, to customers and to Vice Presidents. I’ve been able to find mentors and people who have really shaped my skills and helped me understand what I can do for the company. Help and guidance is never far away, and there are always people around who’ve had similar experiences that I can learn from. When I decided I wanted to move into IT for example, the support was there to shadow existing teams and learn what makes them successful so I could develop my own set of skills.
My current position is to manage the business-facing side of the UK IT team, working to develop IT solutions that enable the business to maintain the great customer experience we value so highly here at Enterprise. I’ve now been with the company for 10 years and have worked across a number of different business areas – even so, I still feel like I could change career paths if I wanted to.
Employee development continues to be important at Enterprise, and it’s something I’ve always been passionate about, largely due to the fact that I’ve had a different journey through the company. Working as part of our Diversity committee, I’ve helped organise two internal careers fairs with the aim of increasing awareness about other roles exist within the company and what they entail. Since I’ve been in a management role, I’ve been asked to mentor less experienced employees from other departments and recruited interns onto my team from local universities.
