Thanks to the support I received I achieved all the goals in my 5-year plan
The reason why I love working for Enterprise Rent-A-Car is the fact that from day one I’ve always known what I needed to do to get to that next stage in my career. The best thing about knowing what comes next is that you can plan ahead and set your goals. Within six months I had completed my management training, which usually takes a year. After eight months I was already an Assistant Manager, and after four years, an Area Manager. To make it that far so quickly was breathtaking, but I’m not unique, I know plenty of women who’ve had similar career growth. Success boils down to two main things: self-motivation and the support structure at Enterprise. At every stage of my career I’ve always known where I was going and how quickly I could get there, and the support I received helped me succeed.
Push yourself towards your goals
One thing that I believe sets Enterprise apart, is the fact the company doesn’t hold or restrict progress. I’ve always been self-motivated, Enterprise helped me focus on that, and the results are clear. The way that Enterprise works makes it straight-forward to advance your career. I’ve always known what sales figures or specific company KPIs I needed to reach to advance, and I made sure I achieved the right results. I set my future career out with specific goals of how quickly I wanted to move from one stage to another. Having that game-plan in place and the motivation to follow through, made it all a lot more achievable.
The support structure at Enterprise is amazing. It comes from the company’s attitude to progression, they’re there to help you to succeed. A key part of that support is your mentors, who are there alongside you for every step you take in the business. To maximise the impact your mentor has, make sure you’re always listening to what they’re sharing, as they know the best ways to drive your career forward. The biggest thing I learnt from my mentors was to take opportunities when they present themselves. If I hadn’t embraced that mentality from my mentors, I don’t think I’d be anywhere near where I am today.
I’m now in a position where I’m mentoring, I’ve taken what I’ve learnt from my mentors and am now trying to pass it on, making sure that my mentees have the best opportunities for success. The biggest thing I teach my mentees is confidence, especially with my female mentees. Something I’ve learnt from being an Area Manager, managing both men and women, is that women look at everything they can’t do. Giving them the confidence to believe in their abilities is the key to success. I’m very passionate about promoting gender diversity, including being a part of numerous diversity committees, and helping young women to climb the ladder and improve the diversity within Enterprise is a real labour of love.
We have created an environment here at Enterprise where all kinds of women are able to thrive. Hopefully, this article has helped to demonstrate that and will inspire more women to join me on by applying for Enterprise’s graduate management training programme. Just remember, have a 5-year plan, set yourself goals along the way, and make sure you keep pushing on – with the help of Enterprise you’ll achieve every goal. The sky really is the limit with Enterprise.
