Are you a student going anywhere this summer? Keeping a travel blog can help you keep in touch with friends and family, but it might also help you find out what you’re interested in, where you want your career to go, and even help you pick up skills in online marketing and content management. So what kind of travel blog should you go for? Here are some things to consider, and some great examples to give you inspiration:
- What are your interests?
When you’re writing a travel blog, it might help to think about what you’d be interested in reading about if you were back home. Let your passions shine through. If you’re a bit of a foodie, for instance, and you spend your time gazing longingly at pictures of impressive meals, then why not focus on that in your blog? If you’re travelling this summer on a budget, share your experiences, tips, and hacks for travelling affordably. Discuss budget-friendly accommodations, transportation options, local markets, and free or low-cost attractions.
- What do you know today that you didn’t know yesterday?
Travel blogging can be a saturated market, so it can be good to say something interesting; something that most people don’t already know. Some of the best travel blogs set out to do just that: to give readers strange and interesting facts about a region; facts that they might not find out on their own. Check out Atlas Obscura on this one: this beautiful site is a project by a whole community of curious travellers, setting out to learn more about the world.

- How are you challenging yourself?
Sometimes, just travelling can be a challenge in itself, but there are some travellers out there who set out to make things more interesting for themselves. Maybe you could set out to visit every museum or every art gallery in Europe. For a guide on ‘how to travel blog an interesting challenge’, check out the No Baggage Challenge, where one traveller (Rolf Potts) blogged about travelling around the world, carrying nothing except the contents of his pockets.
- Are you more of a visual person?
Words not your thing? That’s okay. Some of the most popular travel blogs are from wandering photographers. If you’re going anywhere this summer, you might want to grab your camera, and tell the story of your journey through interesting shots along the way. Take pictures of the things that speak to you, and show them to the people you care about. Check out Beer and Beans for inspiration here: these amazing travellers have an instinctive knack for capturing the mood of a city, and we’d particularly recommend their pictures of Paris and Venice for great ideas on evocative photography. We’d also recommend the amazing #followmeto: an Instagram travel photography project inspired by the cameraman’s girlfriend, who got impatient and wanted to drag him off while he took a picture. The results are pretty special, and the local costumery and beautiful shots will definitely make you want to follow in their footsteps.
